Encouragement for your walk with God

Jesus said, “…whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst…” -John 4:14
The Lady At The Well
Jesus broke the social norms of his time and often his actions and words were not what people expected. Yet, he was always led by the Holy Spirit and did only what he saw his Father doing. The lady (Samaritan) at the well is a great example of Jesus not being held to certain societal expectations. The story took place in Samaria in a town called Sychar. Jacob’s well was there and in Sychar Jesus talked to a Samaritan women, asking her for water from the well.
Her response was of utter disbelief: “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans) (John 4:9).
However, that did not stop Jesus from offering the woman living water, water that would satisfy her spiritual thirst. Jesus spoke words of knowledge to her (things about her life she had never told him-secrets of her non-marriage and previous marriages). After Jesus told her everything she had ever done, she understood Jesus was a prophet. She also knew that for her whole life she had been drinking water from other sources; through her search for love, she came up empty, time and time again.
The conversation continued and then ended with Jesus telling her that he was the coming Messiah (the Christ). “…Jesus declared, ‘I who speak to you am he'” (John 4:26). It was in that moment the woman understood the true Living Water stood before her and that she could believe and be satisfied. For only Jesus can satisfy our spiritual hunger and thirst. Jesus said, “…Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35).
Draw Deep
In the middle of this story, the Samaritan woman thought Jesus couldn’t draw her water because he had no bucket to draw with and because the well was deep. But Jesus’ true intention wasn’t to talk about drawing physical water, but rather he wanted to talk about spiritual water.
‘”Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?”‘ (John 4:11).
All too often, we think about living water like the Samaritan woman thought about physical water. We either don’t have the faith (the method for drawing spiritual water) to believe or we don’t have the perseverance to keep drawing (asking) for living water when we don’t receive it right away. This can be true of anything we are asking for in prayer.
Jesus said in Matthew 7:7 to “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” This kind of asking, seeking and knocking in Matthew 7 is a continual one. It’s not a one time prayer and answer. Jesus wants us to ask and keep asking. He wants us to draw and keep drawing closer. For it’s from his hand we receive all blessings and answers to our prayers.
Speaking of prayer, why is it that we don’t ask more often? Perhaps it’s because we lack the faith to believe. Or we feel that we’re not worthy to receive from Jesus. But that’s not true. We are more than worthy because he makes us worthy through the cross; he wants to freely give to us! When we start to ask and believe, that’s when miracles happen and our lives are changed. It’s not based on our goodness but solely on his goodness, kindness and love.
Let’s draw deep and keep drawing- Jesus truly satisfies us – and it’s through his love and mercy that we can be filled and at the same time desire more of him! The living water Jesus gives will continue to fill us and overflow into our lives as we draw near and draw deep in faith.
‘Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks of this water (physical) will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14).
I think that’s pretty good advice
Thank you William! May God bless you with his wisdom and love! And may you drink and be satisfied for Jesus is the Living Water!
