Encouragement for your walk with God

“Hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” -Romans 5:5

Poured Love

Hope is a painting based on Romans 5. The heart represents the hearts of believers receiving God’s love, which is being poured out by the Holy Spirit (the dove). “Hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us” (Romans 5:5).

The Greek word for poured is Ekcheo, which means, “I pour out; I shed” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance).  This “verb indicates a present status resulting from a past action” (NIV Study Bible, Zondervan).  In other words, God hasn’t just poured out his love once in the past when he died on the cross.  On the contrary, He is continually pouring out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit right now!  How amazing that God is pouring out his love in this present moment!

Hope That Does Not Disappoint

Even more interesting is that Ekcheo also means to gush forth. God is not pouring out his love slowly, but it’s gushing from his heart to ours by the Holy Spirit. He loves us so much that He is surrounding us with the water of His love!

“For God so loved the world…” (John 3:16).  Notice how John could have said For God loved the world, but instead he chose to add in the word so.  In Greek so is Houtōs, which translates “to this degree”.   So indicates the great and vast degree or measure of God’s love for us.  And it’s an immeasurable love beyond all magnitude.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!  And that is what we are!…” (1 John 3:1).  So, how are we to respond to this great love that the Father has lavished upon us?

Let’s respond as his children by fully receiving His love with open arms and hearts.  Now that’s hope that does not disappoint!
