Encouragement for your walk with God

“But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” -Luke 8:15

After God’s Own Heart

David is famously known as a shepherd, warrior and king in the lineage of Jesus.  King David came from humble beginnings, being the youngest of his family, but he had something his siblings and even King Saul did not have; he was a man after God’s own heart.   “…the Lord has sought out a man after His own heart…” (1 Samuel 13:14).

David truly loved the Lord and wanted to know God’s heart.  The Hebrew word for heart is lēḇāḇ, which means “inner man, mind, and will” (https://biblehub.com/hebrew/3824.htm).  It also means soul and affections.  Even though David was prone to evil, just like we all are, David had a heart to please the Lord.  He wanted to obey God and to do His will, not his own.

God said…”‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do” (Acts 13:22).

God has never been interested in the outward appearance.  In the time of David the Jews were all about appearances when they selected King Saul.  He was tall and looked like a leader and a king from the outside.  Rather, the LORD said, “…Do not consider his (Saul’s) appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.  The LORD does not look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

It’s the inside, the heart or will of a person, that is most important.  Our inner man, our soul, is what God sees.  And like King David, our hearts can align with the Lord’s heart.  Perhaps that’s why the Hebrew word (lēḇāḇ) for heart doesn’t change between talking about David’s heart (1 Samuel 16) and God’s heart (1 Samuel 13).  We can be one with the LORD and our hearts can become pure and holy with a desire to please Him and Him alone.  For like King David, when we hear God’s word (seed), retain (obey) it, and persevere through trials, we will produce a crop that’s “a hundred times more than was sown” (Luke 8:8) unifying us even more with the LORD.

In fact unity is what Jesus prayed for us in John 17.  “…I (Jesus) pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you…” (John 17:20-21).  It’s a complete unity where our heart and God’s heart become one and we can truly obey him out of love and say I love you JESUS!
