“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  See, I am doing a new thing!”

-Isaiah 43:18-19

Clean

Ocean waves are not only powerful in nature, but are also cleansing in substance and form.  Have you ever noticed how the saltwater of the ocean not only burns a cut on your arm or leg, but also heals it quicker than if you never touched the salty sea?  The sodium chloride helps heal our bodies.  Something else that is remarkable is how the foamy waves wash upon the shore time and time again.  There is low tide and high tide; it’s constant, never stopping.  Each day the water washes the sandy shore clean and makes it smooth again.

When I see the photograph, New Beginnings, I’m reminded of God’s constant grace and forgiveness.  The way the ocean cleans the shore is the way the Lord cleans our hearts. Time and time again, “He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9, KJV).  He never fails in his faithfulness and love.  When we confess our sin, he forgives and forgets.  We must do the same.  We must forget the past and look to God who is doing a new thing.  Just like the sun rising in New Beginnings, God is rising on us and in us.  By the Holy Spirit we are filled to overflowing with the light of Jesus, and we are made new.  Thank you Jesus for making us new and doing a new thing!

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12 ).

Our Help

Is it possible to forget our sin?  Can we stop dwelling on our struggles from yesterday-the former things-and look to Jesus who makes all things new?

So often, the enemy likes to remind us of our shortcomings; he likes to put doubt in our minds as to whether we really love God or love our sin more.  How do we counter the thought attacks and how do we get beyond what should already be behind?  The answer is found in where our focus lies.  In other words: we must look to God.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills- where does my help come from?  My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1).

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

Our help comes from God.  He is with us now and he is our future.  When we lift our eyes to the Lord, he lifts us up, giving us strength and a reminder that “All things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27)!
