Encouragement for your walk with God

“…my cup (overflows) runneth over.  Surely goodness and mercy (love) will follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”    -Psalm 23:5-6

Shepherd And Father

Psalm 23 is one of the most famous Biblical passages of all time, quoted in many movies, songs and books; read at countless memorials and funerals.  King David’s psalm is not just familiar to believers but also nonbelievers alike.  There’s just something comforting and timeless about Psalm 23.  King David seems to have touched on the very heart of God, beginning with the first three verses:  

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul:  He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake” (KJV).  

The man after God’s own heart had a unique perspective of God that not everyone sees.  He understood that the Lord was his Shepherd and his Father.  And like a good shepherd who takes care of his sheep, the Lord, as a good Father, takes care of his children.  David was fully aware of this and expressed a closeness with his heavenly Father, who provided, protected, comforted, guided and even blessed him amidst his enemies.  David knew the love of the Lord and wanted to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life (Psalm 27:4), and ultimately in the life to come.  King David said it best when he wrote, “Surely goodness and mercy (love) shall follow me all the days of my life:  And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever” (Psalm 23:6).   

Overflowing

Many times we talk about our cup being half full or half empty.  What if instead we started saying our cup is overflowing?  What if we could see the way King David saw, knowing the Lord’s presence and truly understanding how much he has blessed us?     

When that begins to happen, a heart of gratitude naturally rises up.  We are thankful because we are blessed beyond all blessing, truly cared for by a loving Shepherd and Father.   

I pray that the Lord will keep in us a heart of thankfulness and give us a King David perspective to see that our cups are overflowing with blessing, goodness and love!

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:  for though art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:  Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”  – Psalm 23:4-5 

“…And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge- that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”  -Ephesians 3:17-19  

“In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.  I am going to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”  -John 14:2-3
