Encouragement for your walk with God

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!  And that is what we are!”

-1 John 3:1

Children of God

We often associate the Lord speaking or revealing something to us in a loud or obvious way.  However, with Elijah, God spoke to him in a “gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:12-13). And before the whisper even came, there was a powerful wind, an earthquake and a fire.  However, God’s voice was not in those obvious ways.  Rather, God chose to speak to Elijah in a still-small voice.  That reminds me of a time, several years ago, when the Lord spoke to me during a college worship gathering.  At the time, God impressed in my spirit a small phrase:  “You’re in my heart.”  Although it was a simple phrase, it was very powerful, and meant so much knowing that God was my Father and loved me as his child.

The Father’s love is the greatest of loves and he lavishes it upon us.  To lavish means to give freely and generously.  It’s the action of bestowing something upon someone else.  When God lavishes his love, he pours it on us abundantly with all of his heart.  The Father’s love is so great “that he gave his one and only Son (Jesus), that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).  For all who receive and believe in the name of Jesus, he gives “the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).  Father God longs to hold us as his child and look into our eyes with joy and love, the love of a father.

Always Within Reach

Not only does God hold us in his arms, he also upholds us with his hand.  “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

There are times when we need to be rescued, when we need God to pull us up because we’ve fallen down.  Like a loving father, he’s always within reach.  We just need to raise our hand towards him, so he can take hold of our hand and pull us to safety.  “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you'” (‭Isaiah 41:13).

Feathers

As a father, God comforts us and protects us with his feathers.  Birds shelter their babies from storms; God does the same for us.  It’s under the wings of God that we find refuge and peace.  Father God is good and like any good father, he protects his children from harm.  “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge…” (Psalm 91:4).

God Demonstrates His Love

The greatest demonstration of love is a sacrifice.  And Father God gave the ultimate sacrifice by sending his Son, Jesus, into the world to die for our sins and to rise again in victory.  He loved us that much to die for us, even though we were living in sin.  Jesus’ demonstration of love on the cross was what redeemed the world and expressed the true heart of a father.

Father God calls us his children, holds our hand, covers us with his feathers, and demonstrates his love through his Son Jesus.  We have so much to be thankful for! Thank you Lord for showing us the Father’s love and for lavishing your love on us everyday!

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:  While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  -Romans 5:8
